Melbourne suburbs: choose your daily journey, not a name on a map

It is easy to pick a favourite Melbourne suburb from photographs. Choosing somewhere that works on an ordinary Tuesday is harder. I start that decision with the campus address, not a suburb ranking: the journey to class will happen much more often than a walk to a beautiful beach.

    Find your actual destination first

“Near the university” is not an address. An institution may have several campuses, while your course runs in a particular building. Before looking for accommodation, I suggest confirming where you will study and sketching a typical weekly route: home, classes, the library, groceries and the journey back at night.

Imagine two options. One room costs less, but the trip requires two changes. Another costs more, but you can walk to class. Neither automatically wins. The question is how much money, time and energy you will have left after a normal study week.

Atmosphere matters — but check the particular address

In the CBD, the city is almost on your doorstep: trams, people and shopfronts. Carlton, Fitzroy and Brunswick are possibilities if northern Melbourne’s cultural life appeals to you; Footscray is worth exploring if you enjoy the west’s diverse food scene. These are starting points for a walk, not promises that every property will be convenient or affordable. Study Melbourne offers a similar introduction to the city’s different neighbourhoods.

I would walk from a prospective home to the stop, visit the street in the evening and check where to buy groceries. A suburb’s name cannot tell you whether traffic reaches the bedroom or your housemates’ routines will suit yours.

    Look beyond the rent

Compare like with like: a room with a room, furnished accommodation with furnished accommodation. Add bills, transport and essential purchases. Further from the centre does not necessarily mean cheaper; current listings must support that assumption.

The free tram area also needs a route check. Travel is free when the entire tram journey stays inside the Free Tram Zone. Check its actual boundaries with Transport Victoria.

You do not have to decide immediately

Where possible, begin with temporary accommodation and inspect longer-term options in person, as Study Melbourne recommends. Your first impression of the city may change after a few trips to class.

To me, a good suburb is not the one that photographs best. It is somewhere your everyday life fits your budget without becoming a constant race against the timetable.
