Melbourne transport: count the hours, not just the trips
The distance to campus may look short on a map. In real life, you must add the walk to the stop, waiting and changes. That is why I calculate a transport budget in two units: dollars and hours. A cheaper home can stop being good value if every study day begins with an exhausting journey.
Try the journey before relying on it
Before classes start, travel from your accommodation to the actual building at the time you expect to commute. Then check the evening journey home. One direct service can be more convenient than two shorter legs with a change. Assess the particular timetable, not just distance.
Check your airport journey separately. One operator’s prices and payment rules do not automatically apply to another. Confirm payment arrangements for your route with Transport Victoria or the operator; do not assume every bus or train works the same way.
Today’s fare is not a permanent price
Temporary half-price travel runs from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027. The maximum daily full fare during this period is A$5.70; the concession fare is A$2.85. SkyBus, ferries and non-subsidised regional buses are excluded. Transport Victoria publishes the conditions.
For next year, I would leave a budget buffer and check fares again. A discount helps today, but should not become a long-term promise about your expenses.
A student card does not automatically mean a discount
The International Student Travel Pass is available to full-time international students taking a bachelor or associate degree, diploma or advanced diploma at participating institutions. Master’s and PhD courses are not in that list. At the checking date, a state-wide pass costs A$154 for 90 days, A$308 for 180 days or A$556 for 365 days. These are the published ISTP prices already; do not halve them again. Check eligibility and application steps on the program page.
Confirm eligibility with your institution first, then compare the pass with your actual travel pattern. Two days of classes and five days away from home produce different calculations.
The free zone has a boundary
A tram journey entirely within the Free Tram Zone is free. Normal payment rules apply if it starts or ends outside the zone. Check the map and conditions with Transport Victoria.
My final test is simple: could you repeat this journey in the rain, carrying a bag, after a long day? If so, it works for your life as well as the map.
Checked on 13 September 2026. Recheck fares for travel after 1 January 2027.
