Working on a student visa: an extra shift is more than extra money

A call asking you to work tomorrow sounds like good news: you are valued and could earn more. Before accepting, I suggest opening your own hours record as well as your class timetable. An employer sees its shifts. A student needs the complete picture.

    One limit across different jobs

Students covered by condition 8105 generally have a 48-hour fortnightly limit while their course is in session. A fortnight is 14 days starting on Monday. Count work across employers; a company’s payroll cycle does not determine the visa period. Check your own conditions through VEVO and Home Affairs.

I would keep a single calendar recording dates, start and finish times, breaks and actual hours worked. Separate notes for a café and a shop are not enough if the total never appears anywhere.

Why two payslips are not enough

Home Affairs’ official example has 15, 30, 30 and 10 hours worked over four weeks. The first pair totals 45 hours and the last pair 40. However, weeks two and three total 60. Overlapping fortnights matter; hours cannot be averaged over a month. The example appears in the official procedural instruction.

That is why it is better to check proposed shifts before accepting rather than reconstruct a roster after payday. I would also allow time for travel, classes and preparation: a permitted maximum does not have to become your personal target.

No class today does not necessarily mean a course break

Scheduled breaks differ from a class-free day during semester. Separate rules apply once a master’s by research or doctorate has started. Unpaid activity is not automatically excluded from work; mandatory registered course placements have specific conditions. Work before your course starts must also be checked against your visa conditions, not an employer’s verbal assurance. Home Affairs explains these distinctions.

I do not assess individual visa exceptions. An unclear situation needs a specialist lawfully authorised to provide immigration assistance.

    Your workplace rights remain

A student’s visa obligations do not remove an employer’s employment obligations. Fair Work explains international students’ workplace rights and how to seek information.

To me, the right question is not how many shifts you can obtain. It is what schedule you can lawfully and sustainably combine with study. Prepare your arrival budget without treating future earnings as guaranteed.
