Without IELTS: which alternatives can work?

Admission without IELTS is possible, but first establish what replaces it in your case. The institution sets admission rules; Home Affairs sets visa rules. One decision does not satisfy both stages.

A provider may accept another test, recognise previous English-medium study or offer an English pathway. Obtain written confirmation from the provider. The visa has its own list of accepted tests and exemptions.

A standalone ELICOS principal course is included in the test-score evidence exemptions. An “ELICOS plus bachelor degree” package does not automatically receive that exemption. Where test evidence is required, English preparation may reduce the IELTS threshold from 6.0 to 5.5 with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or to 5.0 with at least 20 weeks, subject to the applicable conditions.

Prepare an accepted test result or evidence for a specific exemption. A medium-of-instruction letter may help with university admission, but it does not establish every visa exemption on its own.

A packaged application requires a CoE for each course. Home Affairs uses the principal, final course to determine financial and English evidence requirements. Insurance, financial documents and GS responses are checked separately.

Home Affairs does not accept at-home online tests. For TOEFL iBT from 21 January 2026, registration must use “Taking TOEFL for Australia”. Duolingo is not on the visa list. Check result validity for your application and test date.

Compare the full cost of each option: a test and possible resit, English tuition, living costs during the course and insurance. PTE cannot be promised to be cheaper, nor can every learner be promised a half-band IELTS improvement in 10–12 weeks. Prices, preparation and individual progress vary.

Monash College’s A$5,920 charge in 2026 is for repeating an Extended English unit in Foundation, not a universal English-course fee. Before paying, establish what the institution accepts and what evidence the visa requires. Clarify progression from English study to the principal course, including what happens if the required level is not reached on time.
